Transform Your Patio into a Relaxing Oasis with These Amazing Outdoor Ceiling Fans (2024)

An outdoor ceiling fan can cool you off and chase away pests, making your screened porch, patio, or three-season room a more comfortable place to hang out throughout the year. Small outdoor ceiling fans are good for enclosed porches, while bigger fans can get the air moving in larger three-season rooms and even open areas like pergolas.

To help you find the best outdoor ceiling fan for your space, we installed and tested 17 different fans in our own outdoor areas. All the fans were evaluated for their ease of setup, design, effectiveness, quality, and value.

According to Jason Lamprey, owner of Square One Construction Service, you need to choose your outdoor ceiling fan based on its exposure to the elements. “For patios or decks that are covered and shielded from direct rain, a damp-rated fan is generally adequate,” says Lamprey. For exposed areas like pergolas, he says a wet-rated ceiling fan is necessary.

With that in mind, we’ve identified the best damp- and wet-rated outdoor ceiling fans for every situation. These include pull chain models, options with remotes and smartphone controls, high-quality lighting, and energy-efficient motors.

What We Like

  • Low profile for plenty of headroom

  • Sleek modern design

  • Stainless steel construction

What We Don’t Like

  • No light kit or remote control

Out of all the fans we tested, the Hunter Cassius stood out as the best outdoor ceiling fan due to its resistance to the elements, ample airflow, and ability to complement an outside style. We tested this fan in both a covered porch and a bedroom (just with a different number of blades) and love how much headroom it leaves due to the compact design.

The Hunter Cassius is well-suited for outdoor use in large covered patios, porches, and three-season rooms because it’s rated for operating in damp conditions. It’s also cold weather rated and features rugged stainless steel construction that’s corrosion and rust-resistant.

We liked how much air this fan moves and how well it cools the room. If you have a three-season room with a couch or pull-out bed, you’ll appreciate how quiet it is while still pushing enough air to keep you cool while you sleep (we know since we’ve used the same fan in a bedroom).

Thanks to the thorough instructions, we were able to install the new fan in just over an hour after removing the old one, which had taken us roughly 10 minutes. Even though we anticipated a lengthier wiring process, the addition and labeling of all hardware made it much faster, and the use of color-coded cables helped immensely.

Keep in mind that this is a no-frills outdoor ceiling fan with pull chain operation, so it doesn’t come with a light kit or remote control. The lack of a light kit is a benefit if your ceilings are low, though, since it provides extra headroom. This fan isn’t built to accommodate a light kit at all, so you may want to check out a slightly less low-profile option like the Vox Smart Indoor and Outdoor 5-Blade Flush Mount Ceiling Fan (our best smart pick) if lighting is a top priority.

The Hunter Key Biscayne boasts a huge, nautical-themed light fixture that sets it apart from the competition. We tested this fan in our home and found that it is perfect for just about any covered space or patio (it’s damp-rated). Just keep in mind that while it can handle humidity, it's not designed for rain or snow.

In addition to the light fixture, the weathered zinc finish and barnwood blades add to the rustic vibe. If the included LED bulbs aren’t to your taste, you can change them out to achieve the brightness and color temperature that you’re looking for. It uses regular light bulbs, so you can switch to any A19 bulb with an E26 base that you like, even smart light bulbs.

This fan uses an AC motor, so it isn’t completely silent, but we found Hunter’s WhisperWind motor to be one of the quietest non-DC options we’ve heard. It operates at three speeds, but we found the middle speed to be the best for cooling off.

The supplied pull chains allow you to control the fan; however, we did find them to be somewhat short. They worked for us, but you may want to pick up a pull chain extender if your ceilings are high. For added convenience, you can also add a damp-rated Hunter remote control kit if you get tired of the pull chains.

What We Like

  • Fun tropical design

  • Effective airflow

  • Stands up well to the elements

What We Don’t Like

  • Limited wiring instructions

  • Wall control not included

We love the airy, tropical design of this Hinkley Lighting ceiling fan, with its big, leaf-shaped blades that move silently through the air. Thanks to the DC motor, it’s an exceptionally quiet fan, and we didn’t notice any sound or vibrations even at the highest speeds. It’s ideal for quiet conversations out on the covered porch or enjoying the sounds of nature without the constant whooshing of a fan getting in the way.

Despite its extremely quiet operation, we were very impressed with the way this fan cooled us off, even in very humid weather. Of course, it didn’t do anything to decrease the humidity, but the patio felt much more comfortable on humid summer days with the fan running.

We installed this fan in a screened patio, so it was exposed to extreme temperatures and humidity. After constant exposure to 80-degree weather, rain, and even snow, it held up well, continuing to perform just as well as it did when it was brand new.

This fan doesn’t come with a wall control (Hinkley sells a four-speed wall control separately) and doesn’t include wiring instructions, but we were able to wire it to a wall fan switch to turn it on and off to supplement the included remote.

What We Like

  • Three installation options

  • Sleek matte black design

  • Compatible with universal remotes

What We Don’t Like

  • Pull chain may be too short

  • Remote not included

  • Dim light

Remotes can get lost, and wall switches are often located inside, which is why we like this dual-pull chain Honeywell ceiling fan for covered porches, patios, and other outdoor installations. We had no issue utilizing the fan's included pull chains (one for speed and another to control the brightness of the built-in light fixture).

We found that the pull chains work well if you have low ceilings, but you may want to pick up a ceiling fan chain extender if your ceilings are higher. Each pull chain is 12 inches long, but they connect above the light fixture, so they only hang down a few inches. You can also wire it to two wall switches (one for the fan and one for the light) or use a universal fan remote kit if you change your mind about the chain controls later.

This fan also comes with dimmable LED lights, but we found that they weren’t bright enough. We recommend picking up two 100W equivalent LED bulbs for more useful lighting. Since you can adjust the brightness of the lights, using a brighter bulb lets you enjoy everything from inviting mood lighting to more functional lighting for times when you’re eating on your outdoor dining set.

It is damp-rated with ABS blades that shouldn't warp or blend, so it’s a great choice for outdoor spaces as well, as long as they are protected from rain and snow. We also like that you can install it in any of three ways, including flush mounted, with the included downrod, or on sloped ceilings.

What We Like

What We Don’t Like

  • No wall controls

  • Reverse switch is on the fan

For anyone looking for an outdoor ceiling fan with a remote control, we recommend the Hampton Bay Mena. The remote control uses radio frequency instead of infrared, so you don’t need a line of sight to use it. We found that the remote included with this fan was very straightforward, without a lot of complicated options or buttons. One button turns it on and off, a second adjusts the speed, the third changes the light brightness, and the fourth changes the color temperature.

The user-friendly remote also offers three different LED light settings: 2700K warm white, 3000K soft white, and 5000K daylight. We liked that we could modify the color temperature, but we would have preferred a dimmer switch to provide even more control over the light. We love how easy this fan is to assemble and install. Hampton Bay’s QuickFit system includes a slide-on mounting bracket for fast installation and QuickInstall blades that only take seconds to attach (no screws needed.) Our favorite is the magnetic light kit, which snaps into place effortlessly.

We found that the combination of a heavy motor and lightweight blades kept the ceiling fan more stable at the highest speed, as we noticed no wobbling at all of the motor. It's also damp-rated and a great choice for covered porches and other protected outdoor spaces.

What We Like

  • Compact size with protective cage

  • Comprehensive remote control

  • Quiet operation

What We Don’t Like

  • Limited airflow

  • Can’t change the light

Small spaces call for small fans, and this 25-inch fandelier from Home Decorators Collection is precisely that. We like how strong the airflow is for such a small fan, and the protective cage is a must-have if the ceiling in your covered porch or patio is low.

We installed this fan in a three-season porch with a peaked ceiling, about 12 x 12 feet in size. Although our room was slightly bigger than the recommended room size (10 x 10 feet), we could still feel the powerful breeze from all directions, even at a distance of six feet from the fan. With that said, airflow is limited due to the small blades, so you’ll need two or more of these (or opt for a different fan) if your space is much larger.

This fan comes with a comprehensive remote control for adjusting the fan speed, changing the light brightness, and setting an auto-off timer. The remote was a little complicated to set up since you need to open the fan to find a code to match with the remote, but it worked well once we finished setting it up. You can connect the fan to a wall switch to turn it on and off but not to adjust the fan speed or illumination (you’ll need to use the remote for that.)

We liked the built-in light, but it’s important to note that you can’t swap the included LED for a different color temperature. The built-in LED has a warm white (3000K) temperature that works well in most situations, but you can’t change it later like you can with the 2Modern Windflower Indoor Outdoor LED Smart Ceiling Fan (our best splurge pick).

What We Like

  • Powerful air circulation

  • Intuitive remote control design

  • Durable design

What We Don’t Like

  • No wall controls

  • Airflow not felt at lowest settings

We like this fan from Minka Aire for large outdoor spaces because its wide blade span and powerful motor provide exceptionally strong air circulation. This fan worked very well in our screened gazebo, providing good airflow through the large interior space. It’s well-suited for outdoor use with a wet rating and durable, weather-resistant plastic blades, and it includes the hardware necessary for sloped and flat ceiling installations. We found that the blades took a bit to get going (which is reasonable given how many there are), but once they did, the fan was very consistent, with no lag or vibrations. We didn’t notice a lot of airflow at the two lowest fan speeds, but there was a definite breeze at the two middle speeds. We felt the most comfortable with the two highest speeds on a hot day, cooling down almost instantly. This fan comes with a remote that’s intuitive and easy to use, but we wish it were also compatible with wall controls. It does support app control via your smartphone, but only if you install it within range of your Wi-Fi network, which won’t always be the case with an outdoor fan (like our gazebo installation).

  • Quiet operation

  • No vibration

What We Don’t Like

  • No lighting

  • No wall controls

With hand-carved balsa wood blades evocative of airplane propellers, the Maverick II is easily our favorite outdoor ceiling fan in terms of design. We loved the simple, minimalist design that really stands out from other ceiling fans, including other propeller designs. The fan includes just three blades, but fine-tuned aerodynamics allow them to push a surprising amount of air in addition to looking good. We installed this fan in a covered porch area immediately above our favorite outdoor sofa, and we were impressed by the airflow. At the lowest setting, it provided a comfortable cooling breeze to the sofa, and at the highest setting, it could be felt at the furthest corners of the porch (12 x 20 feet). The blades are well-balanced, and we didn’t notice any vibration, even at the highest speed. It was very quiet as well, with the movement of the air being the only noticeable noise during operation. Since the blades are carved from real balsa wood, the fan is available in a variety of finishes that imitate other types of wood (oak, walnut, koa) in addition to matte white and black. This fan is remote-operated, which means you can only operate it with the included remote. We found the remote to be very easy to use, but we wished that the fan worked with wall controls or had some smart home connectivity as a backup, like the Vox Smart Indoor and Outdoor 5-Blade Flush Mount Ceiling Fan (our best smart pick).

What We Like

  • Easy installation

  • Lots of airflow

  • No vibration or noise

  • Sleek design

What We Don’t Like

  • Complicated wall switch operation

With its smart home compatibility, high energy efficiency, and dimmable, replaceable LED lights, this fan is definitely worth splurging on. We installed the 2Modern Windflower in a screened-in patio, replacing an older fan, and immediately fell in love with its sleek, elegant look. It was an instant upgrade, with more airflow, less noise, and a higher-end look compared to the fan it replaced. Our favorite thing about this fan, aside from the sleek design, is its performance. It features a wide blade diameter for excellent airflow across a large area, easily cooling down our entire patio. With the fan set to high, we could feel the air even when standing outside the screened patio area. This fan uses an energy-efficient DC motor that we found to be virtually silent in operation and vibration-free. We installed the fan without any professional assistance (just a helper to hold the motor in place), and it looks and feels very stable, not vibrating at any speed.Outside of its core functionality, this fan also includes a large central LED light (available in soft, warm, and bright white) that’s fully dimmable. It’s also replaceable, which is great since you aren’t locked into one color temperature if you change your mind later. We wish the wall switch was more responsive (you need to hold the button down for several seconds to operate the light or fan), but that’s the only issue we had.

What We Like

  • Effective airflow for a small fan

  • Very quiet operation

  • Dimmable lighting

What We Don’t Like

  • Trouble connecting to Wi-Fi

This smart fan from Vox features advanced smartphone controls and comprehensive smart home integration, which is why we recommend it as the best smart outdoor ceiling fan. We installed this fan in the enclosed back deck at a lake cabin, and we were impressed with the strength of the airflow for such a small fan. We could feel the airflow at every speed, but the highest speed setting circulated the air well and cooled us off with a pleasant breeze.

This fan includes a comprehensive set of smart features, but we were impressed with how well it worked with just the remote control when we had trouble connecting to Wi-Fi. That’s important when installing a fan in a spot where internet connectivity can be spotty since the smart features are just a bonus and not necessary to the fan's operation.

App functions include daily scheduling up to a year in advance and adaptive learning that allows the fan to learn your habits over time. Smart home integration lets you control the fan through your Alexa, Google Home, and more, with support for most smart home systems (and more coming in the future through app updates.)

Final Verdict

The Hunter Cassius is our pick for the best overall outdoor ceiling fan, with its low profile design that’s crucial for outdoor porches without a lot of headroom, weather-resistant stainless steel construction, and sleek modern design that works well in most spaces. For an option you can install in more exposed areas, we recommend the wet-rated Vox Smart Ceiling Fan (our best smart pick). It’s flush-mounted to provide a lot of headroom, comes with integrated LED lighting and a remote, and works with smart home systems like Alexa and Google Home.

How We Tested Outdoor Ceiling Fans

Over the last few years, we’ve spent more than 1,900 hours testing 17 outdoor ceiling fans in our own screened porches, covered patios, gazebos, and pergolas. We evaluated each for ease of setup, design, effectiveness, quality, and value. We also evaluated the usefulness and effectiveness of fans with additional features, like LED lighting and smart home connectivity.

  • Ease of setup: We installed each fan according to the manufacturer's instructions, timing how long each one took. We noted any problems we encountered, such as requiring an assistant to hold the fan during installation. For fans with smart features, we downloaded the corresponding apps, set up the smart features, and recorded how long that process took, along with any difficulties we encountered.
  • Design: To evaluate design, we looked at how well each fan fit in our space. We considered the physical size of each fan, the number of blades, and how easy it was to reverse the rotation of the blades. For fans with remotes, we noted how easy it was to operate from a far distance. We made note of the length of any pull cords and any difficulties we encountered in reaching them for fans that had them.
  • Effectiveness: Throughout the testing period, we used each fan to cool off and provide airflow to our outdoor spaces, noting how effective each was. We tested each fan's speed, evaluating which provided the best airflow. We also noted whether or not each fan was successful at dissipating smells, circulating air, drying damp areas, and reducing humidity.
  • Quality: To determine quality, we evaluated factors like noise and vibrating, noting whether each fan was noisy or shaky at each fan speed. We also noted how much exposure to the elements each fan experienced and how well it held up over time.
  • Value: We determined each fan's value by considering its features and performance and then comparing it to others we tested and to fans on the market.

What to Look for in an Outdoor Ceiling Fan

Size

Ceiling fan size refers to the diameter of its blades, which has the biggest impact on how much air it can move. While increasing the fan's speed won't do much to boost air volume, getting a fan with bigger blades will precisely do the job.

To determine the size you need, Jason Lamprey, owner of Square One Construction Service, recommends assessing the square footage of your space in addition to the ceiling height. “From my experience, a good rule of thumb is to choose a fan that is roughly 2 inches in diameter for every foot of room width,” Lamprey says. “For example, a 12-foot-wide patio would be well-served by a 24-inch fan.”

That rule of thumb lined up well with our testing. When we tested the Heritage Point 25 inch Indoor/Outdoor fan (our best for small spaces pick), we were able to feel decent airflow about six feet away from the fan in every direction, so it would be ideal for a room that’s about 12 x 12 feet.

Higher ceilings don’t necessarily require a larger or more powerful fan because you can use a downrod to place the fan closer to the floor. If you have high ceilings, Lamprey recommends using a downrod to place your fan about eight feet from the floor. The Minka Aire 12 Blade Ceiling Fan (our best for large spaces pick) is good for high ceilings because it has a 10-inch downrod, but you can add a downrod extension to any of our picks that use downrods.

Damp or Wet Rating

Every outdoor ceiling fan needs to have either a damp or wet rating. “In terms of ratings for outdoor ceiling fans, whether you need a damp or wet rating largely depends on the exposure to elements,” says Lamprey.

Damp-rated ceiling fans are designed to handle moisture in the air, but they can’t withstand direct contact with water, so they need to be installed under cover. They work well in humid environments and covered outdoor spaces. The Hunter Cassius (our best overall pick) is damp-rated, so it’s a good fit for screened patios and three-season porches where rain won’t be an issue.

Wet-rated ceiling fans are designed to handle direct exposure to the elements, including rain and snow. If you have an outdoor area that isn’t totally covered, like a pergola, you need a wet-rated ceiling fan. You should also consider a wet-rated ceiling fan if your outdoor area is covered but not screened. If there’s any chance of wind-blown rain hitting your fan, it should be wet-rated. The Hinkley Lighting Tropic Air (our best quiet pick) is wet-rated, and its tropical leaf blades are perfect for poolside installations.

Installation Requirements

“Installing an outdoor ceiling fan does often require specific wiring considerations, particularly ensuring that all connections are weatherproof and using circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to enhance safety against electrical hazards,” Lamprey advises.

If you’re replacing an existing ceiling fan that has safe wiring in place, then you won’t need to worry too much about installation requirements. You can remove the old fan (after shutting off power to the circuit) and then install your new fan, as long as you’re comfortable with basic home electrical wiring. The main concern is that if your old fan and new fan use different wall switch wiring, you may need to enlist professional assistance if you don’t have extensive electrical wiring knowledge.

Another situation that requires the assistance of an expert is installing a ceiling fan in a brand-new location. In that case, you’ll need to pay an electrician to run new wiring to accommodate your new fan.

Energy Efficiency

Lamprey recommends looking for an outdoor ceiling fan that’s Energy Star certified. “This guarantees that the fan operates at higher efficiency standards, which can translate into significant energy savings over time,” says Lamprey. Fans with this certification are up to 60 percent more efficient than conventional fans, according to Energy Star.

The Vox Smart Ceiling Fan (our best smart pick) is Energy Star certified, so you don’t need to give up features like smart home connectivity and app control to save energy.

For even more energy savings and the added convenience of outside lighting, look for models that include built-in LED lights. A number of our recommendations use LED lighting, but we like the Hunter Fan Key Biscayne (our best with light pick) in particular because you can use any standard LED light bulbs you want to achieve the brightness and color temperature you desire.
